U.S. Department of Labor Announces $500 Million for 5 Grant Solicitations to Train Workers for Green Jobs

During a visit to Memphis last month, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced five grant competitions, totaling $500 million, to fund projects that prepare workers for green jobs in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.

“Emerging green jobs are creating opportunities for workers to enter careers that offer good wages and pathways to long term job growth and prosperity,” said Secretary Solis. “Workers receiving training through projects funded by these competitions will be at the forefront as our nation transforms the way we generate electricity, manufacture products and do business across a wide range of industries.”

Green Education and Training Update: Red Rocks Community College, Chatham University, and University of Denver Launch Green Education Programs

Red Rocks Community College has received at National Science Foundation grant for their green collar curriculum programs. Chatham University has formed The School of Sustainability and the Environment. University of Denver has announced a sustainability minor.

Internship Spotlight: Management Training Internship, Green Spaces – Denver, CO

The intern will work directly with the Founder of Green Spaces to assist in business development and administration. This internship offers significant opportunity for growth. The internship is a management training position. The intern should have strong interpersonal, organizational, and marketing skills. The intern will be required to handle set-up administration of systems, marketing and outreach through social media outlets, web updates and also research and day to day space oversight and set up as we launch our Green Spaces Denver location.

Internship Spotlight: Environmental Policy and Advocacy Intern, Conservancy of Southwest Florida – Naples, FL

Assist Policy Department staff in researching environmental issues on a local, regional, state, or federal level, tracking environmental issues, assisting in daily administrative duties, as well as writing research summaries and policy position statements. Opportunities to plan and develop reports, conferences, and other activities related to community outreach on policy issues, as well as opportunities to participate in relevant meetings of the county and city governments regarding conservation issues of interest. Environmental Lands and Water Policy Interns are supervised by the Natural Resources Policy Manager and the Growth Management Intern is supervised by the Governmental Relations Manager.

US Department of Energy Career Intern Program is a 2-year career-entry and development program aimed at hiring entry-level employees into scientific, technical and business occupations in GS 5-9 grade levels within the Department of Energy. National Renewable Energy Laboratory Selects 33 Community Leaders for Leadership Program

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently selected 33 Colorado community leaders to participate in its 2009 Executive Energy Leadership program (Energy Execs). The leadership program is focused on educating business and government leaders about clean energy solutions that can boost the local economy. The six-month leadership program gives executives from Colorado-based businesses, government entities, universities, and economic development and non-profit organizations an in-depth look at solar and wind power, biofuels and transportation, and energy efficient building technologies. Briefings by technology experts, research laboratory tours and visits to field applications are part of the monthly classroom experience.

The first team of veteran energy efficiency professionals will graduate from the Veterans Green Jobs Academy™ Home Energy Auditor Training (HEAT) Program today at a celebration event to be held at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. In his Commencement Address, the Honorable Colorado Governor Bill Ritter will congratulate the Veterans Green Jobs Academy participants on their dedication to moving our country toward energy independence through the pursuit of ‘green’ careers that will benefit all Americans.
