Clean Energy Sector Ups Spending on Lobbyists

A recent report from research firm New Energy Finance, spending on Washington lobbyists by the clean energy industry has accelerated rapidly in recent years, but still lags behind that the fossil fuel industry. Through the first six months of 2009, the sector spent an unprecedented $r12.1 million on lobbying, According the Center for Responsive Politics, During the same period, oil and natural gas spent $82.2 million on lobbying, with ExxonMobil alone contributing $14.9 million. That’s $2.8 million more that the entire clean energy sector.

New Two Hundred Page Online Tool Helps Communities Go Green

Grassroots Environmental Education recently launched a new web portal called, “HowGreenIsMyTown.org (HGIMT ), which is designed to provide local citizens and decision makers the tools they need to bring about meaningful and lasting environmental change in their communities. The 200-plus page online initiative draws together resources from government agencies and non-profits across America to address the issues of climate change, sustainability and environmental health in one web site.

Entertainment Industry Does Poorly with Sustainability and Social Reporting

Claremont McKenna College’s Roberts Environmental Center recently released a detailed analysis of the social responsibility reporting efforts of the world’s top entertainment corporations that revealed that the entertainment sector lags behind most others in corporate environmental and sustainability reporting. The report scores companies based on the reporting, intent, and performance of their environmental and social sustainability efforts. The research, based entirely on material released on the firms’ Web sites, found that Bertelsmann, a German firm, and CBS, Viacom, and Walt Disney, outperformed the industry giants News Corp. and Time Warner. However, these firms scores were mediocre when compared to the scores of other industries.

Study Says Energy Efficiency Can Save The United States $1.2 Trillion

The United States has the potential to save more than $1.2 trillion in energy costs and cut consumption by 23 percent by 2020, according to a report released last week by global management consulting firm McKinsey & Co. The comprehensive energy-efficiency strategy cited in the report removes approximately 1.1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually — the equivalent of taking the entire U.S. fleet of light trucks and passenger vehicles off the roads. It also could produce savings that exceed California’s total annual energy consumption.

Greenopia Ranks 50 State Governors for Environmental Responsibility

Greenopia recently released a comprehensive ranking of 50 governors in the US and compared their policies, transparency, and interest group ratings to determine which governors were eco-leaders and reveals which state governments are most dedicated to preserving the environment. Investors Are Paying Increased Attention To Climate Change

The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), the European investors’ forum for collaboration on climate change, recently published its second annual report which audits the investment practices of signatories to the Investor Statement on Climate Change. The report, conducted by Mercer, highlights significant progress on climate change, made in 2008, among asset owners and asset managers, who in total represent €2 trillion in assets under management. The research shows that institutions are paying greater attention to climate change, with 75% of asset owners and over 80% of asset managers referencing climate change in their investment policies.
