william beckerWilliam Becker is the Senior Policy Expert on energy and climate for Natural Capitalism Solutions in Colorado, and a Senior Associate with the London-based sustainability think tank Third Generation Environmentalism (E3G), where he works on the link between sustainable energy and international security. From 2007 to 2011, he was Executive Director of the Presidential Climate Action Project, a foundation-funded enterprise that engaged hundreds of experts to develop more than 200 recommendations for climate action by the Obama Administration. Prior to 2007, he served for 15 years at the U.S. Department of Energy, the last 10 as DOE’s Central Regional Director.

He also is an expert on sustainable community development. He has helped dozens of communities create sustainable development plans, many in post-disaster situations. He led or participated on expert teams deployed to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Thailand after the 2004 tsunami, as well as to Beijing to help “green” the Olympic Village at the 2008 Olympic Games.

His career in sustainable development began in the 1970s when he proposed and helped implement a pioneering project in which a rural Wisconsin village relocated from a floodplain and built the nation’s first solar village. Today, that project is recognized as a groundbreaking example of climate mitigation and adaptation. A former journalist who began his career as a decorated 20-year-old Army war correspondent in South Vietnam, Becker’s most recent book — The 100 Day Action Plan to Save the Planet — was published by St. Martin’s Griffin in New York.  Connect with Bill on Linkedin.
