While the collapse of climate legislation in Congress was a setback for some green businesses, many others are moving ahead with projects to develop renewable energy. One major reason: The clean-tech sector is rapidly growing worldwide, and U.S. companies don’t want to be left behind.
The stimulus has had an underwhelming impact on the cleantech sector. Very little of the $36.7b of The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) allocated $36.7b to the Department of Energy (DOE) has gone to cleantech. Nuclear waste cleanup projects and state governments have received most of the money to date. Cleantech funding has been negatively impacted by delays at the state level and states reallocateing funds to address shortfalls in state budgets.
Since the turn of the 21st century the amount of lobbyist spending in the environmental and clean energy technology sector has grown by more than 200%. Spurred by investment from private firms and the public outcry of an exorbitant amount of college campuses across the country, clean energy technology and climate legislation are taking the main-stage on capitol hill. The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 was passed last year in the House of Representatives and the Kerry-Graham-Leiberman bill is due out later in 2010.
Spending in the clean technology industry shows no signs of decline and in spite of the global economic situation, spending by the world’s biggest companies in this area looks set to increase.
