Take The Going with the Grain Challenge

The Going with the Grain Challenge is to design an original and compelling object that can be made from a single sheet of FSC-certified plywood measuring 4-feet x 8-feet x 1-inch. All are welcome to enter, including furniture designers and manufacturers, architects and industrial designers. FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council. FSC certification means that the wood was produced using sustainable forestry practices recognized by the FSC. This Challenge is meant to raise awareness of the importance of FSC certification. It is a companion initiative to DESIGN 21’s FSC Awareness Competition Wood, Paper, Checkmark. Entries should be functional designs that reveal the beauty of the wood. The challenge is presented by The Nature Conservancy and Forest Stewardship Council-US (FSC-US) (FSC-US) and is operated by Design 21: Social Design Network It is sponsored by EcoSystems.

The Institute of Green Professionals Wants Your Ideas on How to Popularize The Integration of Sustainable Development Professionals

The faculty of the Institute of Green Professionals in cooperation with the BIM Education Co-op and the Carter Center in Real Estate, School of Business and Economics at the College of Charleston are asking for your ideas on how to popularize the integration of sustainable development professionals. For the best idea, as determined by our faculty and co-sponsors, we will name the study/research/project after you or your company.

Fellowship Spotlight: Environmental Defense Fund Diversity Fellowship Program

Environmental Defense Fund is looking for diverse candidates who are seeking a professional experience in environmental advocacy. The Diversity Fellowship is a full-time, one-year position focused on a project that is integral to one of EDF’s key program areas – Oceans, Ecosystems, Climate or Health. The Fellow will have the opportunity to work closely with our staff on a significant project, develop core professional skills, understand our approach to environmental issues, and develop an understanding of environmental advocacy as a career path.

New Journal of Sustainable Real Estate – Call for Papers

The American Real Estate Society, in cooperation with and funding by the CoStar Group, announces a call for papers for a special issue of the real estate monograph series on “green buildings and sustainable real estate” called “Journal of Sustainable Real Estate”. The best research paper published will receive a $15,000 honorarium. All papers accepted for publication will receive $1,000. Authors are encouraged to submit original research that can help investors, developers, appraisers, lenders, asset managers, elected government officials and land use regulators improve their strategies, decision-making and understanding of the impact of sustainable real estate practices.

The Institute of Behavioral and Applied Management (IBAM) has issued a call for papers on entrepreneurship, social enterprise, and sustainability papers for its annual conference, IBAM 17, which will be held in Washington, DC, October 1-3, 2009. IBAM is a professional association of college and university professors and students who are studying the field of management, and practitioners in business, not-for-profit organizations, and government who have a strong interest in the issues and concerns related to management.

California American Water Funds 2009 Environmental Grant Program

California American Water is accepting applications for its 2009 Environmental Grant Program. The company will award several grants for a combined total of $10,000 to innovative community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect watersheds and drinking water supplies within the state. A wide variety of conservation projects are eligible for funding, such as watershed cleanups, reforestation efforts, biodiversity projects, streamside buffer restoration projects, wellhead protection initiatives and hazardous waste collection efforts.
