The Women’s Environmental Council is accepting applications for the 2009-2010 Scholarship Program.
About the Council:
The Women’s Environmental Council is a non-profit association of women professionals in various environmental fields. As a national environmental association, the Women’s Environmental Council plays a vital role in providing leadership in environmental issues, encouraging diversity in environmental careers, enhancing the professional skills of members and educating our communities about environmental topics. The mission of the WEC is to make a difference in the community through leadership, education, communication and environmental activities through a forum which facilitates dialogue, interaction and exploration.
About the Scholarship:
The Women’s Environmental Council has three chapters in Southern California – Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. To achieve the goal to support women who are preparing to pursue careers in the environmental field, the council offers scholarships to women attending institutes of higher learning in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. The scholarship can be used for any aspect of education, including books, tuition, research and housing. Students will also receive a year membership for the Women’s Environmental Council.
Eligibility Requirements:
The Women’s Environmental Council will accept applications from female college undergraduates or graduate students who are in pursuit of a career in the environmental field. Degrees or studies may include architecture, biology, chemistry, environmental science, ecology, engineering, forestry, geology and urban planning. Applicants must be attending institutes of higher learning in Los Angeles, Orange or San Diego counties. Transcript must provide prove that you are currently enrolled in school. Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
Criteria for Selection:
The following factors will be considered in the evaluation of each applicant:
1. Grades and Course Work (15 pts)
The applicant must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better. The course work
completed must demonstrate a curriculum in pursuit of the chosen environmental field.
2. Letter of Reference (15 pts)
The letter of reference should be from someone not related to you, such as a teacher or
employer. This letter will supplement your application as verification of your abilities and
interests.
3. Personal Incentive, Volunteerism and Extracurricular Activities (20 pts)
Applicants should list extracurricular school activities, community involvement and work
experience with an emphasis on matters related to your chosen environmental field.
4. Personal Statement (50 pts)
WEC considers the Personal Statement an important factor to evaluate applicants. Please
write a statement that describes who you are and your background. Emphasize your
scholastic activities and how you became interested in pursuing a degree in the
environmental field. Your statement should address how the use of this scholarship will
help you achieve your professional and personal goals. Your statement should not
exceed two single sided 8½ x 11-inch pages and should be formatted single spaced, with
a 12-point font, and 1-inch margins on all sides.

Minimum of $1,000
How to Apply:
The WEC Scholarship application package must be postmarked on or before December 18th, 2009. The application package must include the Application Form, Personal Statement, transcripts, and a Letter of Reference. Transcripts may be official or unofficial.Please send WEC an email prior to application submittal if your reference prefers to mail their letter separately (the above postmark date will still apply) or if your transcripts for the current semester will not be available by the above postmark date.
